Should I Hire a Bid Writer for My ACE Application?
When an ACE Project Grants bid writer is useful, when to write it yourself, and what to prepare before getting help.

You do not always need a bid writer for an Arts Council England application. Sometimes you need a quiet afternoon, a clear budget, and someone to stop you using the word "impact" seventeen times.
But sometimes hiring support is genuinely sensible.
Hire help if the bid is strategically important
If the project is central to your year, involves partners, pays artists, supports access, or carries real financial pressure, it may be worth getting the application written or reviewed properly.
ACE assessors need to understand the project quickly. They are looking for a clear activity plan, public benefit, realistic costs, audience thinking, access, risk, and outcomes. If those things are scattered across your head, inbox, and budget spreadsheet, a bid writer can help turn them into one argument.
Write it yourself if the project is simple and clear
If the project is small, the budget is clean, and you know exactly what you are doing, you may be fine writing it yourself. In that case, paid support might be better used for a review rather than a full write.
The warning sign is not uncertainty. Uncertainty is normal. The warning sign is when the application keeps getting longer but not clearer.
What to prepare before contacting a bid writer
Send:
- The ACE route you are applying to
- Your deadline
- The amount you want to request
- A plain-English project summary
- A rough budget
- Confirmed or likely partners
- Any access, audience, or community detail
- Previous rejection feedback, if you have it
Do not worry if it is messy. Mess is workable. Total fog is harder.
What a good ACE bid writer should do
They should help the project sound specific, not inflated. They should ask awkward but useful questions. They should connect the budget to the activity. They should make the first paragraph understandable to someone who has never met you.
Most importantly, they should keep the bid truthful. A polished fantasy helps nobody.
